Satellite Tv In-Depth – Behind "behind The Music"

Americans love music, this is just a fact of life. Since the dawning of rock music back in the 1950s, followed by the British invasion and the hippie generation, citizens of the United States have always dedicated a good amount of their time to music. This may be a reason why such music magazines as "Rolling Stone" still manage to maintain subscribers while other magazines fall by the waste side.

But if there is one thing that people love more than music, it is the stories behind the music. The tales of a band's rise to success and what they did with that success are almost as entertaining as actually listening to their hit songs. This is probably why VH1 created "Behind the Music," and also why the show was one of the most watched programs on the station for most cable and satellite TV viewers.

Always starting out with the same narration, theme music and dramatic style montage, "Behind the Music" chronicled the life and times of some of the most famous bands to ever record music. The show had a long life span on VH1 from 1997 to 2006, but somehow got cancelled due to its general predictability and shear fact they covered over 150 bands. Lately, however, the show has seen a revival on cable and satellite TV, due to both high ratings on VH1 Classic and the recent new, high definition episodes covering Pink, Lil Wayne and T.I. Therefore, it seems like the world has not seen the end of the program.

Generally, the show profiled the bands, artists and groups that had already broken up, from the classics such as the Doors and Kiss to more modern groups such as the Backstreet Boys and the Spice Girls. Each show was more often than not formatted in the same manner, focusing on a band's road to fame while intertwining specific member's biographies, hit songs and actual confessions. By combining all of these elements, the show was capable of truly portraying an accurate and relevant picture of the different facets and sides of a group's story as well as revealing to cable and satellite TV viewers exactly what caused its demise. Since more often than not drugs or alcohol were the cause for a group's eventual break-up, the repetitive stories and episodes caused the program to get a bit bland. Overall, viewers learned that it is hard enough to break-in to the music industry and find fame, but it is even harder to not let that success get into your head.

At the same time, the cable and satellite TV program was such a tour de force on VH1 that it officially carved a place for itself in popular culture. Granted, VH1 claims itself to be a pop culture channel, but the show's success and predictability allowed it to be not only referenced by many articles chronicling a band's history, but also made fun of by such programs as "South Park" and "Family Guy." In fact, "The Simpsons" did an entire episode modeled after the show's format, poking fun at the program while using its structure to create a great episode as well.  And with the show starting to make a comeback, it seems as if the world has not had enough of the histories of some of the best musicians on the planet.
